Learn the basics of fiction writing with award-winning author Melinda Szymanik. This session will cover plotting, character and 'show and tell'. Bring your stories to life by adding details, descriptions and scenes that will hook your readers!
Open to rangatahi aged 13-18 years - spaces are limited, so book your spot today!

Meet the author:
Melinda writes picture books, short stories and novels for children and young adults. She has won several awards for her work - her picture book, The Were-Nana, won the New Zealand Post Children’s Choice Award in 2009, and was shortlisted for the 2010 Sakura Medal. Her novel, A Winter's Day in 1939, won Librarian's Choice at the 2014 LIANZA Awards, and her picture book Fuzzy Doodle was a 2017 White Raven Selection.
Her picture book Fuzzy Doodle (Scholastic 2016) was a 2017 Storylines Notable Book, a finalist in the 2017 NZCYA Book Awards and a 2017 White Ravens book. Her most recent titles are the picture books Moon and Sun (Upstart Press, 2021) and My Elephant is Blue (Puffin, 2021). In 2023, she was awarded the Michael King Writers Centre Shanghai Residency. When she is not writing or teaching others to write, Melinda likes reading, baking (especially with chocolate), going to the movies, and travelling with her family.

Mobility parking is available with a level accessible path to the front entrance. The building has automatic doors, and an accessible toilet is also available.
